INDONESIA

World Tobacco Growers' Day in Indonesia

On 29 October 2016 more than 1,000 people coming from tobacco and clove farmers join the peace rally in Jogjakarta, Indonesia to commemorate the World Tobacco Growers Day.  This annual event was joined by farmers from all over Java which consisted representatives from Indonesia Tobacco Farmers Association, Indonesia Clove Farmers Association, People Movement for Tobacco Indonesia, and Organic Tobacco Farmers Association.  This year the theme is "Save Our Livelihood"

During the rally they deemed the government to play more pivotal role in protecting the interest of tobacco and clove farmers as well as the tobacco industry.  Held in one of the most famous landmark of Jogjakarta, Malioboro, the peace rally aimed to voice out the voice of farmers to the government about the importance and existence of tobacco industry, as they are threaten by the international agreement such as Framework Convention of Tobacco Control (FCTC).  As they see the content of FCTC mostly endangered the existence of tobacco and clove farming in Indonesia.  For example one of the provision in the FCTC push for the alternative crops to replace tobacco farming globally. These example is not fit with Indonesia's condition as some farming areas only can plant tobacco.

Other provisions that they voice out as that will threaten the tobacco industry in Indonesia are plain packaging, ingredient ban, and limited relations between government and tobacco industry stakeholders.  Indonesia Clove Farmers Association clearly stated that their livelihood will be in danger of extinction if ingredient ban is implemented since 94% of cigarette in Indonesia is using clove as one of the key ingredients. At the end of peace rally the farmers signed a petition that will be send and convey to President of Indonesia which to point out that there are 6 million people livelihood is endangered.

MACEDONIA

World Tobacco Growers' Day in Macedonia

On 28th November, for the fourth time, the Union of tobacco associations of Republic of Macedonia in cooperation with the municipality of Prilep, has gathered to mark the International Day of tobacco growers.

In city square "Alexandria" tobacco representatives and tobacco associations have presented different aspects of tobacco production in Republic of Macedonia.

According to Dancho Mileski, chairman of the Union of tobacco associations of Republic of Macedonia, this event is the fourth in a row, after the Union joined in the celebration of Tobacco World Day organized in 50 countries in the world by International Tobacco Growers Association (ITGA).

- We are marking this day to say that we remain faithful to the cultivation of tobacco, which is a long tradition here, and this culture is strategic for Macedonia. We are sending a message to the government to give us further support- said Mileski.

- We are at the beginning of this year's purchase of this year's production and we do not expect problems.

-We do not expect problems. Although we have smaller amount of crops it has high quality and we expect to achieve a good price. Currently tobacco is main source of money for around 150,000 Macedonian citizens, or about 28 to 30,000 families who grow tobacco. Tobacco merchants said that this year there were around 25.5 thousand tons tobacco, but real harvest is around 19,000 to 20,000 tons. We expect to achieve higher average purchase price from previous year's price of 182 denars per kilogram, said Mileski.

Prilep's Mayor Marjan Risteski points out that tobacco in the Prilep region has important part in the local economy.

- Tobacco is part of the local economy, it's the only source of money for many families and we hope that the farmers this year will achieve a good purchase price, said Risteski.

MALAWI

World Tobacco Growers' Day in Malawi

Malawi held a successful cerebration in commemoration of the World Tobacco Growers' Day on 31st October, 2016 at the Civo Stadium in Lilongwe. Malawi held the commemorations on this day instead of the 28th October to accommodate the Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development, Hon. Dr George Chaponda.

The Minister stressed on the importance of tobacco to the country and emphasized the point that Malawi will carry on with the growing of the crop until such a time an alternative is found.

He assured the growers that Government took a step further in lobbying with tobacco merchants to increase their quotas for the ongoing season to accommodate the surplus the country produced.

In his remarks, TAMA President Mr. Reuben Maigwa assured the merchants that growers are ready to grow according to their demand in the next season and went further to ask them to consider upping the price matrix once the crop indeed meets their demand.

The event gathered together around 400 participants, majority of whom wre tobacco groers from two districts of Central Region of Malawi. Representatives of the growers gave their success stories coming from tobacco growing.

A football match between the Tobacco Industry Select and one of the reputable broadcaster, Zodiak Broadcasting Station (ZBS) Socials capped up the cerebrations.
