WHO Officer Says FCTC Will Not Affect Leaf Production in Indonesia

Dina Kania, Tobacco Free Initiative officer for WHO Indonesia, said ratifying the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control will not affect the country's tobacco industry as the treaty contains provisions to offer assistance to tobacco farmers and workers in the cigarette manufacturing industry. Kania said the FCTC is intended to protect citizens from the effects of tobacco consumption, not to shut down factories or kick farmers out of their jobs. In other countries with high leaf output like Brazil, China and India, FCTC ratification did not result in lower leaf tobacco volumes, she said. Indonesia is the only country in Asia that has not signed or ratified the FCTC (Jakarta Post 12/21).
