Farmer's Voice

South Africa

Drought conditions continue to ravage South African agriculture and water resources remain under pressure in many of the tobacco production areas. Dependent on irrigation, the 2015/2016 SA tobacco crop suffered due to the lack of water in many parts, adversely impacting quality.  Despite the dire circumstances, most tobacco farmers have planted for the new season, with much-needed rainfall bringing relief in some of the production areas.  If the weather conditions remain favourable, a better quality crop is expected, albeit slightly smaller than the previous year on the flue cured crop.
