In Malawi, farmers sold a total of 5.1 million kgs of leaf tobacco worth US$ 5.8 million at an average price of US$ 1.14 per kg in the first week of the 2014 marketing season, which began March 24th, according to data from Auction Holdings Limited. The average price was lower than the minimum price of US$ 1.76 per kg set by the government at the start of the season. Tobacco Control Commission CEO Bruce Munthali said competition among buyers was relatively low in the first week, but "[w]e are hopeful that the market will stabilize as we progress and that the buyers will offer better prices" (Daily Times - Malawi 4/1).
