Land put to tobacco has reduced significantly by 30% - 35% compared to last year. This is attributed to largely the elongated selling season last year that saw a lot of rejections on the burley auction sales that demoralized farmers, low market prices, reduction in registration quota by the Tobacco Control Commission - in a bid to control over production, and the issue of early start of rainfall mentioned above.Industry tobacco volume forecast for 2017, conducted in February, indicated an overall figure of 125 million Kg, a 35% significant decline on 2016 sold volume of 195 million Kg.
