Consumption overview

Indeed, although we are faced with a general reduction in cigarette consumption, other factors continue to merit the attention of the authorities.

In the European Union (+ Switzerland and Norway), despite a reduction in their weight by 8.8% in 2016 compared to the previous year, consumption of counterfeit products is close to 48.3 billion cigarettes (i.e. 9% of the total, according to KPMG). Not only the lack of control poses a risk to public health, but also the States are deprived of tax revenue, whose loss in this selected region reaches, according to this consultant, a total of 10.2 billion euros. Similarly, the revenue of tobacco companies is affetcted.
