China: Country Seventh Largest Cigar Market In World

China's cigar market registered the highest growth in recent years and is now the seventh largest in the world, withShanghaiconsuming almost 50% of the cigars imported fromCubaand theDominican Republicin2013. In2008-12, the output of Chinese cigars more than doubled to 326 million pieces.

Prior to 2012, the State tobacco monopoly administration has set a limit of 800,000 pieces per year for cigar imports, but in 2013, the limit was raised to 1.3 million pieces. Davidoff recently launched limited edition cigars to commemorate the Chinese Year of the Horse. Meanwhile, data released by Habanos SA, a joint venture between the Cuban government and Altadis (Imperial Tobacco Group), showed that the company sold cigars worth US$ 447 million in 2013, while volumes increased 8% year-year ( 3/27)
